Key scholarship chance for 64
SIXTY-FOUR Bahraini youngsters were named as candidates yesterday, for the Crown Prince's International Scholarship Programme.
They will now compete for 10 places in next year's group, who will get fully-funded scholarships to study at universities or colleges abroad.
The scheme aims to give top secondary-school pupils the chance to study at some of the best institutions in the world.
"We received over 170 applications this year," said the scheme's student affairs head Shatha Ahmad.
"This is a very competitive, merit-based programme that targets the most outstanding Bahraini students. Applicants have to have a grade point average (GPA) of over 97 per cent just to be eligible to apply."
The first phase of the selection process involves singling out about the top 60 applicants, based on a combined score of their GPA and their results on the Qualifying English Language Test.
The test was staged at the Khawla Girls School, Gudaibiya, on July 6.
These candidates will go on to take a nine-week Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SAT) and International English Language Testing System (IELTS) preparation course over the summer, which will start tomorrow, at the Khawla Girls School.
Next February, after the first semester of the academic year, the top 20 applicants will be selected based on their scores on the SAT and IELTS, their cumulative GPA and a portfolio of their achievements.
The final 10 scholarship recipients will be selected after going before an interview panel.
"We would like to congratulate the applicants who have been accepted as candidates for next year's scholarships," said programme director Dr Ronald Koller.
Candidates must register at the Khawla Girls School at 8 am tomorrow, taking with them a copy of their CPR, passport and four passport size photographs.
